About MeCA

Descriptions of State Counseling Organizations

The Maine Counseling Association has been instrumental in setting professional and ethical standards for the counseling profession. MeCA has made strides in accreditation, licensure and national certification. It represents members' interests within the:

MeCA members work in educational settings from preschool through higher education, in mental health agencies, community organizations, employment agencies, rehabilitation programs and private practice.

MeCA Bylaws

The purposes of the Maine Counseling Association are to enhance individual human development and to advance and promote the discipline of counseling by:

  1. Conducting educational and professional meetings and conferences
  2. Stimulating, promoting, and conducting research
  3. Publishing educational and professional literature
  4. Advancing high standards of professional ethics
  5. Informing and educating the general public about the counseling profession
  6. Establishing contacts with various organizations with common purposes
  7. Examining conditions which create barriers to personal growth and working to remove them
  8. Supporting the development of state divisions corresponding to those existing in the American Counseling Structure
  9. Encouraging state divisions to cooperate with related state departments in the promotion of common objectives.

MeCA is a state branch of the American Counseling Association.
